There are two kinds of white noise machines. The first kind plays a loop of recorded fan sound or rain or static on a chip. They are fine until they are not, which for us meant noticing the point where the loop repeats, and then not being able to stop noticing it. Sleep became worse once we identified the loop. That is not how it is supposed to work.
The Yogasleep Dohm Classic is the second kind. It has an actual fan inside it. The sound it makes is the sound of air moving through a casing with adjustable holes, not a recording of that sound. There is no loop because it is not a recording. It runs until you turn it off, and every night sounds essentially the same.

The design is simple. A round white housing with a cap you rotate to change the tone and volume. Turn it one direction and the holes open more, making the sound fuller and louder. Turn it the other direction and it gets quieter and slightly higher pitched. There are two fan speeds to switch between, which gives you four basic combinations to find what works for your room.
We have one in the bedroom and one at the door of the kids room. The bedroom one masks street noise and my husband falling asleep before I do, which I appreciate. The kids room one means they sleep through normal house sounds in the evening without needing complete quiet from everyone else.

It is not wireless, so you do need a plug nearby. It has been plugged in every night for over two years and it still sounds the same as the first week. That kind of reliability is worth something when you are counting on it every night.
At $45, it is above the impulse-buy range, but below what most sleep-focused gadgets cost. The 101-night trial that comes with it means you can return it if it does not work for you. In our case it worked, and we have since bought a second one. If sleep has been frustrating in your house, this is the kind of thing that can quietly make a real difference.
